BIRM MEDIA FILTERATION

Birm filters are used to remove iron from incoming feed waters. These iron filters use a type of granular filter media called “Birm”. It is manufactured from a type of natural pumice mineral coated with manganese oxide. The size of the filter system is directly proportional to the flow rate of the water, in gallons per minute. The higher the flow rate, the larger the system required.

Multimedia Filtration

Multimedia filters are used to reduce the level of suspended solids (turbidity) in incoming feed water. Suspended solids consist of small particles such as silt, clay, organic matter, algae and microorganisms. Incoming feed water that is high in suspended solids can cause a high-pressure drop and reduce the effectiveness of downstream filtration equipment such as reverse osmosis membranes and ion exchange beds.
Multimedia filter is suggested when the Silt Density Index (SDI) value is greater than 3 or when the turbidity is greater than 1 NTU.
